When choosing a Criminal Justice program, people often have similar questions, several of the commonly asked questions are addressed below:

1. Will my diploma indicate that I completed my degree online?
No, not usually. Most schools issue the same diploma for students who complete their work online as they do for students who complete their work on campus.

2. What admissions tests will I need to complete in order to apply to a Master of Criminal Justice program?
Many programs require students to take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) before applying, and some programs have minimum requirements for GRE scores. However, there are a number of programs that don’t require students to take the test. Additionally, students are usually required to provide a statement of purpose and to submit reference letters.

3. Does my undergraduate work have to meet certain requirements?
Generally yes. While requirements vary by school, most criminal justice programs require you to have met a certain undergraduate GPA. Additionally, some programs require you to have completed at least some of your undergraduate work in areas relevant to the field of criminal justice.

4. How much will the master’s program cost? Is financial aid available?
This varies greatly according to the program. Generally, public schools are cheaper than private schools and, among public schools; in-state tuition is cheaper than out-of-state tuition. However, many public schools allow their online students to pay in-state tuition regardless of their residency status. Federal student loans are available to students enrolled in an accredited master’s program.

5. How long will it take me to complete the program?
Traditionally, a master’s in criminal justice takes about two years for a full-time student to complete. However, there are some accelerated programs that allow students to finish in less time. Part-time students may take three years or more to complete their degree.

6. Do I need previous criminal justice experience?
No. Some criminal justice programs are aimed more explicitly at those with industry experience than others, but generally industry experience is not required.

7. What jobs can you get with a Master in Criminal Justice?
Jobs are available in many of the traditional criminal justice sectors, including corrections and the court system, and a Master of Criminal Justice can also open up careers in federal law enforcement and in higher education.
